FAQ
That depends on what you’re trying to build. Any time agents are interacting, DIDComm is being used. Here are a few rules of thumb you can use to model how much DIDComm you might need.
Whether the action is establishing a connection or issuing a credential, a negotiation protocol takes place which consumes DIDComm. For example, establishing a connection with a peer uses 3 DIDComm messages. Depending on the case, verifying credentials can use up to 4 DIDComm messages.
So if you need to onboard 1,000 users and issue them all a credential, you will probably need about 3,000 DIDComm messages to establish the connections, another 3,000 DIDComm messages to issue them credentials, plus a few thousand DIDComm messages set aside for chat between agents. So the developer tier would be the right fit.
Still have questions about the number of DIDComm you’ll need? Reach out!
DIDComm is the fundamental communication mechanism of decentralized identity. Trinsic provides a managed agency service on behalf of your organization. Each agent message that’s sent and received consumes our API and has a marginal cost associated with the compute resources used. This is also a fair way to ensure that decentralized identity is affordable, no matter the use case.
We don’t cap your usage. We simply set up tiers to price our service based on usage. If you are in the developer tier but end up needing additional DIDComm, you can go over the 10,000 DIDComm messages allotted – we will not cut you off. You’ll just pay a small overage fee per DIDComm message over 10,000 that you use.
Then you’ll pay a small overage “à la carte” rate for the additional DIDComm you use. The overage fee is simple; we charge 20% over your original rate in increments of 1000 messages.
Example: Suppose you’ve subscribed to the developer tier. If you end up using 11,843 DIDComm messages in the month, you’ll be charged $99 for the first 10,000 messages. The remainder (1,843) is charged in increments of 1,000. There are two increments of 1,000 remaining. The price per thousand is calculated based on 20% above your normal rate of $0.0099 per message ($99 divided by 10,000 messages) which is equal to $0.01188 per message. Multiply this by the two increments of 1,000 and you get $23.76. So your total bill for the month would be $99 + $23.76 = $122.76.
Credentials are held on a user’s device in a secure digital wallet. But in order to be verified remotely and ensure interoperability, cryptographic primitives are anchored to a publicly readable ledger. Our API lets you easily write interoperable schemas, credential definitions, decentralized identifiers, and revocation registries to public ledgers like Sovrin. These things must be written (or “anchored”) to the ledger in order to issue credentials.
Yes, public ledgers like Sovrin charge a fee to deter spam.
Yes! We charge a flat fee of $99 per credential type you need to issue, or $49 if there’s an existing schema to use. We don’t make much money on this service (Sovrin charges us about ~$85 when we do this for you). This service is in place to make it easier to adopt the Sovrin Network – we handle the billing with Sovrin so that you don’t have to.
Of course, you could write to the Sovrin ledger on your own; you can go through a ~month-long approval process, sign a contract with the Sovrin Foundation (through an established legal entity like an LLC), establish a billing relationship, download the CLI, execute the correct commands from the relevant documentation, and pay a monthly invoice for any transactions you make to the ledger. Again, you’ll still be paying about $85 per credential type that you want to anchor.
So in summary, if you’ve already written to the Sovrin ledger previously or want to do it yourself, that’s great! You can use our products to interact with those ledger entries. But we hope our service will save you headache and get you up and running faster. If you have questions about this service, feel free to reach out.
